In parables concerning the Kingdom of God and faith, Jesus drew on the mustard plant, as in Mark 4:31-32. The black mustard is the most common of the several varities found in the Near East; it grows rapidly, up to 15 feet in height. The mustard seed, by the way, is extremely small.
