Zechariah alluded to the crucifixion of Jesus

In the Bible's book of Zechariah, there is a prophecy in which:

1. God is the speaker.
2. God is referring to himself as someone who was pierced.
3. And God is saying that he would be mourned, in the same way that people would mourn the loss of an only child.

Here is the NIV English translation of the prophecy:

"And I will pour out on the house of David and the inhabitants of Jerusalem a spirit of grace and supplication. They will look on me, the one they have pierced, and they will mourn for him as one mourns for an only child, and grieve bitterly for him as one grieves for a firstborn son. - Zechariah 12:10 (NIV translation).

The prophecy coincides neatly with the Christian understanding that Jesus is God incarnate as a man, and that Jesus was pierced (during the crucifixion), and that Jesus is the firstborn child of God, the only child of God.

The verse is part of a prophecy that says that there would be a time when the nations of the world would attack Jerusalem, and that the attack would fail, and that the people of Jerusalem would then mourn the one who was "pierced."

Many Christians view this verse as a prophecy involving the End Times, when the armies of the world attack the land of Israel, and Jesus returns to save the Jews and is acknowledged as being the Son of God.
